๐ Welcome to Seoul Algorithm
Welcome to Seoul Algorithm, your guide to exploring the vibrant rhythm of Seoul โ from sizzling street food to hidden hiking trails, from ancient palaces to neon-lit backstreets. Whether you're visiting for the first time or planning your next trip, this blog is here to help you decode the city.
Seoul isnโt just a city โ itโs a landscape of contrast. Wrapped in mountains and sliced by the Han River, you can hike to scenic views in the morning and dine in sleek Gangnam restaurants by night. The cityโs layout makes it surprisingly easy to navigate once you get the hang of it.
Here are a few things to know as you arrive:
- ๐ Subway is king โ Itโs clean, cheap, and reaches most corners of the city. Just try to avoid rush hour unless you're okay with being up close and personal with strangers.
- ๐บ๏ธ Naver Maps over Google Maps โ Google Maps doesnโt work well here. Use Naver Maps or Kakao Maps for navigation, and Naver for searching local info.
- ๐ฑ Pay first or up front โ Many restaurants use kiosks for ordering or ask you to pay at the front counter after your meal. Tipping is not expected. Seriously. None. ๐ โโ๏ธ
- ๐ฌ Cultural quirks โ Personal space is a little different in crowded areas. Donโt be surprised if people stand close. Most locals are helpful if you ask questions (even if they look shy).
- ๐ Donโt rent a car yet โ Traffic and parking can be stressful. Subway, buses, and taxis will take you pretty much anywhere.
- ๐๏ธ North vs. South โ The north side of the river (Jongno, Hongdae, etc.) holds a lot of history and culture. The south (Gangnam, Jamsil) leans modern, sleek, and upscale.
- ๐งพ Prices = what you pay โ Tax is included in prices, so no mental math. What you see is what you pay.
๐ค And of course โ K-pop!
Seoul is the global capital of K-pop. Whether you're a fan of BTS, Blackpink, or rising rookies, this city pulses with music, fandoms, and idol culture. Youโll find:
- Entertainment agency buildings in areas like Apgujeong and Cheongdam
- K-pop merch stores and cafes in Myeongdong and Hongdae
- Live music shows and dance performances in shopping districts or subway stations
- Fan tours that visit iconic filming locations or idol-related landmarks
K-pop is more than music here โ itโs fashion, art, community, and identity. Even if you're not a hardcore fan, it's hard not to feel the energy.
This is just the beginning.
